The Client: Paul McCartney

The Challenge
Designing the packaging for Paul McCartney’s first time back in Russia since the Beatles, a time when their music was censored in that country.

The Concept
Russian nesting dolls

The Solution
He said “Hi, my name is Paul…”
and so it began a series of creative projects we worked on together which included screen graphics for his Madison Square Garden concert, and the main animated titles for his Super Bowl performance.
We decided to take a historical approach and delve into Russian as well as Beatles history, referencing through the dolls the nature of censorship, hiding one DVD inside each doll, each of which would serve to house both of his Red Square and St. Petersburg concerts. The design included illustrations of the man himself playing various instruments.
